THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM

In animals, the metabolism of nutrients produces a series of waste substances. Can be toxic if levels become high. The main waste products are carbon dioxide, ammonia, urea, uric acid, mineral salts and water. Other substances are eliminated by the excretory system.

EXCRETORY ORGANS IN INVERTEBRATES

In porifera and cnidaria, each cell expels waste substances. There are no specialized organs for excretion. Excretion is carried out by Malpighian tubules in insects, and green glands in crustace.

EXCRETORY ORGANS IN VERTEBRATES

In vertebrates, the excretory system consists of several organs: kidneys, ureters, bladder and the uretha, but the most important are the kydneys. Include:

-Filtering blood to eliminate waste and keep useful substances.-Storing waste products front the blood and expelling them from the body as urine.
