TYPES OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS

Animals take oxygen from their enviroment and transport it to the cells. The entire process is called cellular respiration, carbon dioxide is produced as a waste product and is expelled outside the cell.

External respiration is the process of breathing.Animals inhale oxygen from the enviroment and exhale carbon dioxide.

1.CUTANEOUS RESPIRATION

Gas exchange takes place the skin of the animal, requires thin, moist skin and a network of blood vessels that capture oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide.

Cutaneous respiration is characteristic of animals animals that live in humid or aquatic environments.

2.BRANCHIAL RESPIRATION

Gas exchange takes place through gills.Gills are thin extensions onthe body walls surrounded by many tiny blood vessels where gas exchange takes place.

Aquatic animals like fish, molluscs and crustaceans hace this type of respiration.

3.TRACHEAL RESPIRATION

Gas exchange takes place through tubes or tracheae.Airs enters the body through small openings called spiracles, located on the abdomen. Then it moves into the network of tracheae which branch into smaller tubes called tracheoles. This combined network carries the air directly to the cells.

4.PULMONARY RESPIRATION

Gas exchange takes place in the lungs.

Pulmonary respiration is characteristic of most terrestal vertebrates and some invertebrates, like land snails and some arachnids. It is also characteristic of some aquatic vertebrates like dolphins and whales.
